The action potential is a process that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell increases then decreases. A transient negative shift , also known as refractory interval prevents further traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , two types of these potentials are understood, one that is generated via voltage-gated channels, and one that is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience a voltage difference between their external and internal environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur however in some cells this is an expected feature. Cells can show variations in the voltage, as the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain a voltage difference called membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical properties. The time and amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Several types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback mechanisms and lead to the generation of these potentials. They are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced in the muscles are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse communication.
