A process called an action potential happens in which the potential of the membrane of a cell initially increases and then decreases. It is a signature characteristic for a range of cell types in animals, such as muscles, neurons and Endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an essential role in cell-tocell communications. In the beta pancreas cells action potentials are associated with the release of insulin. Plasma membranes feature a unique type of voltage-gated Ion channels producing action potential. These channels are shut even when their membrane potential is near what is the limit of the cell . However, should the membrane potential increase it opens the channels. When the channels are inactive, they allow the flow of sodium ions that increase that membrane's capacity. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions changes the membrane's polarity and consequently they stop functioning. The potassium channels, after which, become active and you can see an outward movement of sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane returns back to its normal state. A transient , negative shift known as refractory period blocks back running of the action kinetic. In the cells of animals, generally two kinds of these potentials are understood, one of which is from voltage-gated potassium channels, and another that occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is an electric field between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very low voltage variations are thought to occur , however in certain cells this is a usual characteristic. Some cells also display up and down cycles as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up phase of an action potential are completed in less that a thousandth of a second. In other cells, the cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain a voltage variation called membrane potential. For neurons, axons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most excitable component of neuron is the Axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too are excited. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold is at -55 mgV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or decrease. It is produced when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane's potential exceeds the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome of activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. It generates action potential as it may produce the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for setting the parameters of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle continues at its fullest. The time and the intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. A variety of Ion Channels have been identified which generate positive feedback loops and eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the generation of higher-frequency possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. They are slower than those that occur by muscle cells are mediated by calcium ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
