A transient negative shift referred to as refractory duration prevents the reverse travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two varieties of these possibles are understood, one that is caused due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that is generated by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain the same voltage between their external and internal environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. In most cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur but in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit fluctuations in voltage as the voltage increases and declines. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells, the up and down phase of an action potential are executed in less then a thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells the cycles may take several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Its duration and amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback circuits that ultimately cause the creation of these potentials. They are involved in generation of faster impulses like nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced by muscle cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
