The rapid inward flow of sodium ions causes a change in the polarity of the membrane and in turn, they disappear. The potassium channels, after which, become activated , and there is an outward flow of the potassium ions . In the process, the membrane is returned to its original state. A transient negative shift , also known as refractory duration prevents the reverse moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , usually two varieties of these possibles are described, for instance, one which is triggered by the voltage-gated calcium channels and another one that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have in a voltage differential between their environment and their inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In most cells, little voltage fluctuations are known for their existence, but in some cells this is an expected characteristic. Some cells exhibit variations in the voltage, as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down phase of an action potential are completed in less than thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized , as they sustain a voltage variation known as membrane potential. In case of neurons, , dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical properties. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body can also be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold is 55 mgV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential is at an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of activity of voltage-gated ion channels located in the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It generates an action potential in order to cause positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback circuit occurs at full strength. The frequency and duration are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Numerous types of ion-channels have been identified which generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately create these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the production of high-speed potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
