Action potential is an occurrence that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell increases and then decreases. It is a typical characteristic for a range of animal cells including muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrine cells. Plant cells can also produce these. Neurons play a vital role in cell-tocell communication. In pancreas beta cells, the action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane is a type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for creating action potential. The channels are closed in the event that membrane potentials are within the potential at rest of cells, however when the membrane's potential increases then the channels will become active. When they are opened, they permit an inward flow sodium ions. This in turn increases the potential of membranes. The swift inward flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity and in turn, they stop functioning. After this, potassium channels get activated , and it is a flow of potassium ions due to which the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient , negative shift known as refractory time prevents the back travelling of the action potential. In the animal cell, generally two types of potentials are in existence, one which is triggered via voltage-gated channels and the other which is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells have the same voltage between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, little voltage fluctuations are known to occur , however in certain cells this is a regular characteristic. Cells can show upward and downward cycles as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells, the up and down process of action possible are completed in less that a thousandth of a second while in different types of cells, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain a voltage difference known as membrane potential. For neurons, axonsand dendrites as well as the cell body have various electrical characteristics. The area that is most excitable in neuron is called the axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 MV. Synaptic connections to the nerve result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential is at an upper limit.

The action potential results from the voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a cluster made of proteins. They remain in the plasma membrane. It produces actions potential due to the fact that it could give rise to positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for maintaining the state of the Ion channels. The action potential is created during the time that the feedback cycle is carried out at full force. The frequency and duration are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles that eventually result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of fast possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels participating in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
