It is an event in which the potential of the membrane in a cell is first increased before decreasing. In majority of cells very low voltage variations are thought to happen, but in a few cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells also display oscillations between up and down when the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is completed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other types of cells , intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical capacity of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized and maintain a voltage difference known as membrane potential. For cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in neurons is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body can also be excited. At the axon hillock the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome of activity of voltage-gated ion channels in the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a group of proteins that remain embedded within the plasma membrane. They produce motion potential because it can be the cause of a positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for controlling the level of these channels. Action potential is generated as the feedback loop proceeds with full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback loops and eventually cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials similar to nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
