In the cells of animals, generally two kinds of these are recognized, for instance, one which is produced because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells keep in a voltage differential between their external and internal environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, low voltage variations are thought to occur but in some cells this may be a common feature. Some cells also show periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage drops and increases. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells, the up and down sequence of action potentials are performed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other cell types, the cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical activity of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.
