A transient negative shift , also known as refractory time prevents the back motion of the potential. At the axon hillock the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization accumulates and that membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

The voltage-gated ion channel actually a group of proteins , which are encased within the plasma membrane. They produce action potential as it may result in an positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for setting the parameters of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle continues at its fullest. Its duration and amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Different types of ion channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback circuits that ultimately produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the generation of stronger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses.
