Action potential is an event in which the potential of the membrane in a cell is first increased then decreases. It is a typical characteristic that is present in a wide variety of cell types in animals, such as muscles cells, nerve cells, and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important role in cell-to-cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potential is connected with the release of insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated ion channel for creating action potential. The channels are closed while the membrane's current potential near that of the cell . However, when the membrane's voltage increases then the channels will become active. Once the channels are open, they permit an inward flow sodium ions, which increase the cell's membrane potency. The rapid inward flow sodium ions results in changing the polarity of the membrane and they cease to function. After this, potassium channels get activated , and the flow outward sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane is returned to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as the refractory phase prevents the return motion of the potential. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials are identified, for instance, one that is generated due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience some degree of voltage variation between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show no voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells this is a typical feature. Certain cells can also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage increases and declines. The time between these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second. In different types of cells, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized because they keep an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. In case of neurons, dendrites, axons and cells have distinct electrical properties. The most excitable component of neuron is the axon hillock but axon and cell body too are excited. At the axon hillock the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold potential is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is created when enough depolarization develops until the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the result by the action of voltage-gated channels located in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a group of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma and produce an action potential in order to result in positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for monitoring the status of these channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback circuit takes place at full intensity. The duration and intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Ion channels of various types exist that can generate positive feedback and create these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the production of high-speed potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in the muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channel that participate in faster nerve impulse communication.
