A transient negative shift , also known as refractory interval prevents further motion of the potential. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials are described, for instance, one that is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

For neurons, axonsand dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most excitable component of neuron is the Axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to rise or fall. It is produced when enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a cluster of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. This produces action potential because it can create the positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the condition of ion channels. Action potential is generated by the positive feedback cycle that continues at its fullest. The time and the intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels are identified that generate positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the production of high-speed potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced by muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse conduction.
