Action potential is an occurrence in which the membrane potential in a cell is first increased before decreasing. As the channels become open, they permit the inward flow of sodium ions which increases its membrane potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity and consequently they cease to function. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and it is a flow potassium ions . The result is that the membrane is returned in its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory duration prevents the reverse travelling of the action potential. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials exist, identified, for instance, one which is triggered by voltage-gated sodium channels, the other can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is the voltage of their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells this is a usual feature. Some cells also display fluctuations in voltage as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second. In other cells, these cycles could take several seconds. The electrical ability of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized . They maintain an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. In case of neurons, , dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical properties. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization develops until that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels which are located within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It produces movement potential because it is able to result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for monitoring the status of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle is carried out at full force. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Many kinds of ionchannels are known to produce positive feedback cycles and ultimately create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials like those of nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in the muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
