Action potential is an occurrence in which the potential of the membrane of a cell initially increases before decreasing. It is a signature characteristic that is present in a wide variety of animal cells namely, muscles cells, neurons and Endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important role in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potentials are associated with an insulin release. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated channels for creating action potential. The channels are closed in the event that membrane potentials are within it's resting value of cells, however when the membrane's potential increases the channels then they open. As the channels become open, they allow the flow of sodium ions that boost the potential of membranes. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and consequently they cease to function. In the following, potassium channels become active and that is followed by an outward flow potassium ions . In the process, the membrane is returned back to its normal state. The transient negative change known as refractory interval prevents further running of the action kinetic. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are known for example, one is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain an electrical voltage gap between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. In most cells, tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to happen, but in a few cells, this is a standard characteristic. Some cells show fluctuations in voltage as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of the action potential is accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second, whereas in different types of cells, the actions can last for a long time. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain the same voltage, also called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. Most excitable portion of neuron is the Axon hillock. However, the axon and body can also be stimulated. At the axon , the remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold voltage is 55 millivolts. The synaptic inputs to the neurons induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential exceeds an upper limit.

The action potential results of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels within the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a group of proteins which remain inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce actions potential due to the fact that it could be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The duration and intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. Ion channels of various types are recognized that create positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of more powerful impulses like nerve impulse. The slower ones, like those generated by muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels that are involved in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
