A transient , negative shift known as refractory duration prevents the reverse traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells generally , two kinds of these are identified, for instance, one which is triggered due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells maintain an electrical difference between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. The majority of cells show tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to be present, however in some cells, this is a standard characteristic. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body too can be stimulated. At the axon , the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is -55 MV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or fall. An action potential is created once enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels located in the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce motion potential because it can create positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the level of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many kinds of ionchannels are known to produce positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the generation of higher-frequency impulses like nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated channel are sodium ion channel that participate in faster nerve impulse conduction.
