Action potential is an event in which the membrane voltage that a cell has first increases and then decreases. It is the characteristic property for a range of living cells, including muscles cells, neurons and the endocrine cell. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a crucial function in cell-to-cell communication. Beta cells of the pancreas action potential is linked to in the production of insulin. Plasma membrane has a particular type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for producing action potential. The channels remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains within an equilibrium potential for the cell . However, in the event that the membrane potential grows and the channels begin to open, they become active. The channels that are active permit the inward flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases your membrane's potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions result in changing the polarity of the membrane and , as a consequence, they become inactive. In the following, potassium channels become activated , and it is a flow of the potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns back to its normal state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory interval prevents further travel of the action potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one which is triggered through voltage-gated sodium channels, the other occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Most cells have the same voltage between their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. The majority of cells show tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to be present, however in some cells, this is a common feature. Some cells also display up and down cycles as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is completed in less that a thousandth of a second. However, in different types of cells, the cycles may take several seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized . They maintain an electric charge that is called membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. The most stimulated part of a neuron is the axon hillock but axon and cell body can also be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group of proteins that remain embedded in plasma membrane and produces the action potential, which can be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the level of these channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process gets full power. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. There are a variety of ion channel types that exist that can generate positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. The slower ones, like those generated by muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
