In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these potentials are understood, one which is triggered by voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells have the voltage of their external and internal environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed for their existence, but in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up action potential cycle is complete in less than the thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells , sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical activity of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. The area that is most excitable in a neuron is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body also become excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is at -55 mgV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane current reaches an upper limit.

The action potential results that voltage-gated ion channels that reside in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. This produces movement potential because it is able to result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in setting the parameters of Ion channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle proceeds with full intensity. The time and amplitude of the action are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ion channels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback processes that cause the creation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels that are involved in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
