In animal cells , typically two types of these potentials exist, described, for instance, one which is produced because of voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

A majority of cells experience an electrical difference between their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). Many types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback loops and eventually result in the production of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that are similar to nerve impulses.
