A process called an action potential happens that causes the membrane potential of a particular cell increases and then decreases. It is a signature characteristic that is present in a wide variety of living cells, including muscle cells, neuron cells, and endocrinological cells. Plant cells can also produce these. Neurons play the most important function in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, actions potential is associated with the release of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for producing action potential. These channels remain closed once the membrane's voltage is close to what is the limit of the cell . However when the membrane's voltage increases then the channels will become active. When the channels are inactive, they permit an inward flow sodium ions that increase the potential of membranes. The fast inward flow of sodium ions result in changing the membrane's polarity and , as a consequence, they stop functioning. Following this, potassium channels become activated , and the flow outward of potassium ions due to which the membrane is returned back to its original position. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory duration prevents the reverse travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one that is generated due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have an electric field between their external and internal environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In majority of cells very low voltage variations are thought to occur , however in certain cells this can be a normal characteristic. Cells can show the cycle of up and down as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials are variable across a variety of. In brain cells, the up and down motion potential cycle are completed in less than thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells , cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized because they keep a voltage variation called membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites as well as the cell body have various electrical characteristics. The most exuberant part of a neuron is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body also get excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold is 55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization builds up until that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results from the voltage-gated channels in the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated channel is in fact a collection of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It generates motion potential because it can produce positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the state of these channels. The action potential is created during the time that the feedback cycle is carried out at full force. The time and amplitude of the action are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles that eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the production of high-speed potentials similar to nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels. The most studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels participating in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
