In the animal cell, generally two types of these potentials are acknowledged, one of which is through voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is some degree of voltage variation between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. The majority of cells show low voltage variations are thought for their existence, but in some cells this is an expected feature. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of more powerful potentials like those of nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
