Action potential is an event in which the potential of the membrane of a particular cell increases before decreasing. It is the characteristic property to a variety of animal cells , including muscles, neurons, and the endocrine cell. Plant cells can also produce them. The rapid flow of sodium ions causes a change in the polarity of the membrane and consequently they cease to function. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory period prevents back movement of the action potential. All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain the same voltage, also called membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons as well as the cell body have various electrical characteristics. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback mechanisms and create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the generation of larger potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels that are involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
