In the cells of animals, generally two types of these potentials are recognized, for instance, one which is triggered via voltage-gated channels, and the second one that occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep an electric field between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed to occur but in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells also display periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up cycles of action potentials are complete in less than the thousandth of a second. In other types of cells the cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical characteristic of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

The area that is most excitable in an neuron is its axon hillock. However, axons and cells body too can be stimulated. An action potential is created once enough depolarization builds up until the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

There are a variety of ion channel types that exist that can generate positive feedback mechanisms and cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved with the creation of higher potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion networks that play an important role in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
