It is an event in which the potential of the membrane of a particular cell increases and then decreases. It is the characteristic property of several animal cells , namely muscles, neurons and endocrinological cells. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a crucial part in cell-to cell communication. The beta cells of the pancreas action potentials are associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type of voltage-gated Ion channels creating action potential. They remain closed even when their membrane potential is near an equilibrium potential for the cell . However when the membrane's potential is increased then the channels are activated. When the channels open they permit an inward flow of sodium ions that boost their membrane voltage. The rapid flow of sodium ions can alter the polarity of the membrane and , consequently, they cease to function. The potassium channels then become active and the flow outward of the potassium ions . This causes the membrane is returned back to its normal state. A transient positive shift known as refractory period prevents back travel of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one of which is created from voltage-gated potassium channels and the second that is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience some degree of voltage variation between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority of cells few voltage fluctuations are believed to happen, but in a few cells this is a regular feature. Some cells exhibit the cycle of up and down as the voltage increases and declines. The time between these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the up and down sequence of action potentials are performed in less than a thousandth of a second. However, in different types of cells, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized due to an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites as well as the cell body have various electrical characteristics. One of the most exciting parts of an neuron is its axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body also get excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 mgV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result on the activities of voltage-gated channels within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion canal is in fact a collection of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. It produces the action potential, which can be the cause of positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for setting the parameters of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle is carried out at full force. The duration and intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Many kinds of ionchannels have been identified which generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in generation of faster potentials similar to nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced by muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
